Education, employment and NDIS support are the three key topics to be addressed at the Bendigo Town Hall.
“Participants will walk away with a better understanding of autism, learn new strategies and how to apply them to their own lives and have the opportunity to pose questions to some of the most informed advocates in the country,” Amaze chief executive Fiona Sharkie said.
The Melbourne-based organisation is Victoria’s peak body for people with autism, their families and their carers.
The state government funded Amaze to provide the forum in Bendigo and five other regional centres in response to the Victorian Government’s Parliamentary Inquiry into Services for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
The inquiry found there was limited access to training, inclusive educational options, diagnosis and intervention services in rural and regional Victoria.
Providing more support for rural and regional communities was one of the priorities in the inquiry’s report, which was handed down in December.
“Through the delivery of these timely regional forums, we aim to arm autistic people and their families with practical knowledge about critical issues such as where to find inclusive schooling options and what support is out there for autistic adults,” Amaze educator and autistic presenter Charie Roberts said.
She will be sharing her experience and insights into how autistic people and families can flourish in regional communities.
Bendigo mother Marlene Blair said she particularly interested in learning more about the education and career opportunities available within the community for people like her 10-year-old son, Drouin.
Drouin has been diagnosed with a number of conditions including autism.
The Amaze roadshow in Bendigo runs from 9am – 3.30pm tomorrow.
Forums have also been staged in Geelong, Ballarat, Traralgon, Bairnsdale, and Wodonga.
