WEST Bendigo off-spinner Zac Makeham bagged seven wickets in the Emu Valley Cricket Association’s highlight bowling performance on day one of round four on Saturday.
Makeham snared 7-97 off 17 overs against California Gully, which was bowled out for 207.
Since 2006-07 Makeham’s seven wickets are the most by a West Bendigo player, with his scalps featuring four caught, two bowled and one lbw.
Makeham also took a catch to have an involvement in eight dismissals.
The bulk of California Gully’s runs were scored by the trio of opener Mick Galvin (59), skipper Brad Webster (43) and Brad Olson (40).
West Bendigo needs another 150 for victory with eight wickets in hand after closing play at 2-58.
Travis O’Connell (38 n.o.) and captain Brendon Lummis (8 n.o.) will continue the Redbacks’ chase next Saturday.
• Mandurang is firmly on track to inflict Emu Creek’s first loss of the season.
The Emus lost 7-49 to crash from 3-110 to all out for 159 in the 42nd over after they won the toss and elected to bat at Pearce Reserve.
By stumps the Rangas were within 15 runs of victory as they finished the day at 4-145 on the back of an aggressive knock from Matt Pask.
Pask smacked 76 off just 62 balls, featuring 10 fours and four sixes, before he was dismissed in the shadows of stumps.
Earlier, Pask also had an impact with the ball for the Rangas in snaring 3-14 off four overs, while Jeremy Hancock (3-31) claimed three wickets as well.
James Pietromonaco also bowled well in taking 2-19 off nine overs, which included the early scalp of Emus’ all-rounder Luke Bennett (2).
Captain Todd Brown compiled 42 off 55 to be the leading run-scorer for the Emus, who had five players dismissed for five or less against a Mandurang bowling line-up that kept the pressure on.
• A spread of six players took wickets for Spring Gully as the Crows restricted Marong to 9-186.
Skipper Alex Sutton (3-24) and James Fox (2-49) both snared multiple scalps for the reigning premiers, who had looked like they’d be chasing a score well above 200 when the Panthers had worked their way to 3-138.
The Marong innings included four players who scored more than 20, with Jeremy Ross (48), who came in under some early pressure at 2-24, their top performer.
• Maiden Gully batted out its quota of 75 overs to compile 7-201 against the unbeaten Sedgwick.
Teenager Angus Chisholm again batted well to make a half-century, with his 58 n.o. following on from his unbeaten 46 against United the previous week.
The Lions’ innings also featured contributions of 32 from opener Alex Gorrie and 35 to skipper Leon Beatty.
• In Sunday’s one-day match Emu Creek (6-141) defeated United (132).
The game featured five-wicket hauls to the Emus’ Anthony Collins, who bagged 5-35 off eight overs, and Tigers’ captain Harry Whittle (5-27).
