STRATHDALE-MARISTIANS V BENDIGO UNITED
STRATHDALE-Maristians recovered from the loss of a clump of early wickets to crack more than 300 against Bendigo United on day one of round four in the BDCA on Saturday.
The Suns were on the ropes early at 4-31 in the 14th over, but their renowned batting depth rose to the fore as they finished with 305 at Bell Oval.
The Suns’ revival was superbly led by Daniel Clohesy, Sam Johnston and an entertaining No.10 innings from Adrian Pappin, who provided plenty of hard-hitting highlights.
Pappin was at his aggressive best in plundering 87 off just 63 balls, scoring 66 of his runs in fours (six) and sixes (seven).
Pappin came in with the Suns 8-193 and together with Jacob DeAraugo (23) and Darcy Bakes (9 n.o.) added 112 for the last two wickets.
As well as the late fireworks from Pappin, the feature of the Suns’ innings was a much-needed 85-run stabilising partnership for the sixth wicket between Clohesy and Johnston.
Together, they took the score from 5-74 in the 26th over to 159 in the 47th before Johnston for the second week in a row was dismissed for 49 – a victim of the “fidgety 40s”.
Johnston, whose 49 came off 49 balls, hit the ball clean from the outset, with 20 of his first 21 runs coming in boundaries.
Johnston was removed by Redbacks’ captain Leigh McDermott, who soon after also claimed the wicket of Clohesy (60).
Johnston and Clohesy were among four wickets for McDermott (4-74 off 29.4), while earlier Miggy Podsoky took the first three wickets to fall after the Redbacks had lost the toss for the fourth time in as many games this season.
Podosky at one stage had figures of 3-15 in his sixth over before finishing with 3-66 for the Redbacks, who have now conceded 665 runs in their past two games.
Meanwhile, the Suns on Saturday night inducted five members into their inaugural Hall of Fame – Kevin Crawford, Shane Higgins, Gerard Sheehan, John Neylon and Ben Irwin.
BENDIGO V KANGAROO FLAT
• Kangaroo Flat’s Chris Barber notched his maiden century in the Roos’ 9-324 against Bendigo at the QEO.
Just like it did the previous week against Sandhurst, Barber’s innings began after the dismissal in the first over of out-of-sorts opener Matt Dwyer (0).
Dwyer slashed outside off stump to a Nathan Fitzpatrick delivery and was caught at slip by Liam Evans.
Barber (107) played a controlled innings from the outset, rotating the strike well and putting away the loose deliveries.
The 24-year-old all-rounder added 62 for the second wicket with his older brother, Daniel Barber (32), and 139 for the third wicket Dylan Gibson (73).
Barber’s 196-ball innings came to an end when he was superbly caught by a leaping Jack Belsar at mid-wicket off spinner Evans (1-59), with his century the 50th scored by a Kangaroo Flat player since 2000.
Bendigo United (57) and Strathdale-Maristians (54) are the only clubs with more first XI centuries made since 2000.
The Roos also had veteran Adam Burns contribute a brisk 45 off 55 in what was the club’s highest score since it made 7-327 against Huntly-North Epsom in round 12 of the 2009-10 season.
Bailey Goodwin (3-51), spinner Tom Hart (2-48) and Fitzpatrick (2-61) were each multiple wicket-takers for the Goers.
GOLDEN SQUARE V HUNTLY-NORTH EPSOM
• Golden Square took the last eight Huntly-North Epsom wickets for 54 runs.
After being sent in, the Power had been solidly-placed at 2-134 in the 55th over with Ryan Grundy (55) and Danushka Wijemanna (23) at the crease.
However, the dismissal of Wijemanna sparked a collapse as Square bowled the Power out in the 82nd over for 188 at Wade Street.
Scott Trollope (4-48) and Corey Van Aken (4-30) proved the chief destroyers with the ball for Golden Square, with the pair combing for 8-78 off 34.3 overs.
Luke Baird (0-25) kept it tight early in only conceding 13 runs off his first 12 overs, before he had 12 hit off his 13th.
All of the Power’s top six made starts, but Grundy’s 55 was their only score over 30.
Grundy was part of a 61-run opening partnership with captain Elliott Massina (27) as they denied unbeaten Square its first wicket until the 30th over.
WHITE HILLS V SANDHURST
• For the second game in a row Sandhurst squandered the opportunity for a 300-plus total, but still has a challenging 270 on the board against White Hills at Scott Street.
The Dragons raced to 100 in the 25th over for the loss of one wicket and were later 2-150, but the Demons worked hard to not only keep the damage to 270, but also bowl Sandhurst out in the 82nd over.
The reigning premier Dragons are still to bat out their full allotment of overs in any of their games so far.
Dragon’s opener Shasheen Fernando was dropped on 0 by Caleb Barras at gully and went on to top score with 51, with he and Joel Murphy (36) putting on 65 for the opening wicket.
That was one of two 50-plus run partnerships Fernando was part of after he then shared in a 58-run stand for the second wicket with captain Taylor Beard (42).
There were some ominous signs for the Demons when Dragons’ power-hitter Ash Gray raced to 28 off just 16 balls, but White Hills were able to tighten the screws as he finished 44 off 50.
Dragons’ recruit Matt Combe (22) was dismissed in an unusual way – run out with a direct hit at the batsmen’s end from what was an Ollie Geary ping at the bowler’s end stumps.
The Demons’ spin duo of Linc Jacobs (3-25) and Jack Bourke (3-61) snared three scalps apiece and over the past two games have now combined for 15 of White Hills’ 20 wickets.
STRATHFIELDSAYE V EAGLEHAWK
• A gritty half-century from teenager Abe Sheahan led Strathfieldsaye from 8-118 to a tally of 173 against Eaglehawk at Tannery Lane.
Sheahan (54) scored his first half-century in the first XI, while another of the Jets’ rising stars in Jed Rodda also dug in with the bat.
No.10 Rodda made 18, with he and Sheahan adding 42 for the ninth wicket in a fighting partnership that was the best of a Jets’ innings that struggled to gain any momentum.
New Hawks’ leg-spinner Russell Stockdale continued his good form, taking his tally of wickets for the season to 18 with 4-65 off 33 overs.
Richard Tibbett (3-26) chimed in with three wickets, while the pair of Cam McGlashan (0-6 off 10) and returning Shaun Knott (0-9 off 10) combined for just 15 runs conceded off 20 overs.
