A two-over par 74 on day one put the Neangar Park golfer in danger of missing the cut in the $400,000 event.
A bogey on the par-four first hole escalated the pressure on Martin, but he responded in fine style.
It was his only bogey of the round as he made birdies on the third, fifth, ninth, 11th, 13th and 16th holes to sign for a 67.
With two rounds to play he three-under par for the tournament, nine shots behind leader Harrison Endycott.
Endycott shot an eight-under par 64 in the second round to grab the outright lead by one shot from Cameron John.
