For many students, the Anzac spirit does not only come alive in the classroom and on Remembrance Day.
They have family members who have served their country
They include Dekoda Callanan.
Dekoda was preparing to make a reading at a school Remembrance Day ceremony to take place after the poppies were planted.
It was something her Grandfather used to read to her.
“It’s a poem and I didn’t understand it when I was younger,” she said.
The poem, The Inquisitive Mind of A Child, features a child asking their mother about the poppies sold for Remembrance Day, which grow in the fields where men fought and died.
Dekoda recovered a copy of the poem a few years ago and has reread it as the world prepares to mark the day the guns fell silent.
“Now I understand what the meaning is,” she said.
