Staff were left distressed after the 8.22 Southern Cross to Epsom service hit a “life-like object” hanging from an overhead bridge at Malmsbury at 9.35pm on October 31.
The incident caused a 96 minute delay to the train involved, delays of up to 44 minutes for the three following services, and the 11.52 from Southern Cross to Bendigo to be cancelled.
The incident caused significant delays to Bendigo services later in the evening as the incident happened on a single section of track.
Police attended the incident and found the object struck by the train was a dummy hanging from an overhead bridge at Forrest Road.
The driver of the train was relieved and replaced with another driver.
A V/Line spokesperson said the company was working closely with Victoria Police to find the person responsible for hanging the object.
“Not only was the incident distressing for our staff, it also caused significant disruption to our passengers and risked damaging the train,” the spokesperson said.
“The train driver was relieved as per normal procedure. Four Bendigo line services were delayed between 37 and 96 minutes and one service was cancelled.”
