Lamb numbers increased to 30,000 head, drawn out by strong saleyard prices late last week. The yarding didn’t have the overall quality of the previous Monday, with more drier skinned young lambs reflecting the season coming forward. The usual buying group operated but at weaker levels, particularly over the plainer light and medium trade weight lambs. Competition for the best pens of heavy young lambs remained solid, influenced by limited supplies. The result was a fluctuating market that showed price corrections of $5 to $15/head across most grades of lambs. The heaviest young sales sold to $250, and there was only about a dozen pens with enough weight and condition to command over $230/head. The main run of heavy trade weights, 24-26kg cwt, sold from $190 to $225 to average approximately $210/head. Once off the lead drafts of lambs with weight, more price variation was evident in the auction. The 22-24kg cwt crossbred young lambs sold from $166 to $205 to average close to $188/head. There were plentiful supplies of 20-22kg cwt lambs, with most sales from $154 to $184/head. On a carcase basis the best heavy lambs were estimated to received from 780c to 820c, while an average run of medium trade weights worked out to make from 740c to 770c/kg cwt. Light weight lambs were below this, making from 680c to 720c/kg cwt, or $100 to $135/head for most. Processors purchased the bulk of the smaller lambs, with restocker interest fairly constrained. There was another big yarding of sheep, comprising mostly crossbred and Merino ewes being sold after lamb weaning and due to the pressure of the dry season. Mutton prices were firm to modestly dearer, with the best demand shown for heavy Merino wethers and ewes with good carcase finish. A good run of mutton was estimated on average to cost processors from 440c to 470c/kg cwt, with the best of the Merino wethers at higher carcase prices.
