But will there be a place for us once we’re dead?
Maybe not in Kangaroo Flat. The cemetery could be as little six months away from running out of plots.
If the current rate of plot pre-purchase continues the cemetery is likely to be six to 12 months away from running out of available plots.
Consumers are able to buy a plot at the cemetery before they die, which they hold the rights to in perpetuity.
The cemetery will still have the capacity to re-open graves, as up to three people can be buried in a single plot.
Remembrance Parks Central Victoria manages Bendigo, Kangaroo Flat, Eaglehawk, White Hills and Axedale public cemeteries.
About 70 plots remain in the lawn section of the cemetery, and just a handful in the monumental section, according to RPCV CEO Dean McElroy.
A lot of plots have been pre-purchased in recent months, as people realised the cemetery was running out of space.
While the cemetery is running out of traditional burial plots, Mr McElroy said that RPCV would be exploring several options that could allow people to have their remains kept in Kangaroo Flat.
“The focus for us will be around about cremated remains and how we can support that,” Mr McElroy said.
“There might be options to install a couple of rose gardens where people can have ashes interred, or the installation of a niche wall where people can have ashes installed in there.”
While the Kangaroo Flat cemetery is running low on space, Mr McElroy said that other Bendigo cemeteries had more than 20 years capacity left if they developed all their available land.
In the coming years he said RPCV would begin planning for the longer term future, which might involve developing more land.
