Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan will today announce $1 million for a 1.7 kilometre section of the Bendigo-Pyramid Hill Road near Sebastian.
Residents brought their concerns to the Bendigo Advertiser in August, describing the road as a “fatality waiting to happen” with drivers forced to travel on the shoulder to avoid broken up bitumen sections.
Letter to the editor: Pyramid Hill Road a crack in the system
The works will cover the section from north of Bassett Road to north of Ketterers Road.
Works on the road are scheduled to begin in February and the funding is guaranteed regardless of the election outcome.
The road connects Eaglehawk to Raywood and will be reduced to one lane while the works take place. The speed limit will be restored to 100 kilometres per hour when complete.
It was one of 45 road projects in north central Victoria planned for the coming months, covering 376 kilometres.
Ms Allan said the government had responded to community concern.
“We heard the community loud and clear and we’re fixing this vital stretch to make our regional roads safer and more reliable for the people and industries relying on them every day,” she said.
The state government enters caretaker mode on Tuesday, meaning it can no longer make binding decisions.
Eaglehawk resident Charley Daniel blamed the state of Bendigo-Pyramid Hill Road on the Labor government’s decision to scrap the $160 million Country Roads and Bridges program.
But Ms Allan said the state government had spent more than $530 million this year on road projects in regional Victoria.
A dedicated country roads body, Regional Roads Victoria, was opened in Ballarat in September.
Roundabout rebuild to deal with freight traffic
A roundabout connecting industrial areas of East Bendigo with the remainder of the city will be reconstructed at a cost of $620,000.
The Strickland Road-Murphy Street roundabout was listed among 91 projects announced on Monday, covering all 48 regional Victorian councils.
The location of other road projects in central and northern Victoria, announced on Monday:

More than $420,000 will be spent on rehabilitating Newbridge Road.
