The Committee works harmoniously with government officers and Parliamentarians to represent the views of the community and to lobby governments, where necessary, to attend to safety and capacity deficiencies in a timely manner.
Over 30 years of cooperation with VicRoads, CHIC has developed a register of known and emerging issues throughout the 600km length of the highway - representing the needs and aspirations of some 802,000 residents.
Some of these items are localised maintenance or safety matters which are routinely addressed by regional VicRoads personnel.
However, there are also issues requiring major works to overcome road network deficiencies which currently greatly inhibit regional, state, and national prosperity.
With the Victorian State elections to be held in November, CHIC is calling on all candidates to commit to supporting the following high priority improvements works on, or associated with, the Calder Highway:
- Construct Calder Park Drive / Calder Highway Interchange at Taylor’s Lakes;
- Construct widening of the Calder Highway between Melton Highway and Keilor Park Drive, including widening and strengthening of the bridge over Maribyrnong River;
- Plan and Construct a Calder Highway bypass of Marong township; and
- Construct various improvements along 17th Street and Benetook Avenue to divert heavy vehicles from sections of the Calder and Sturt Highways at Mildura.
Calder Highway Improvement Committee also encourages all voters to direct their preferences to candidates who assign importance to resolving major issues, affecting the safety and efficiency, on the Calder Highway which is the principal highway route in northern Victoria.

Public holiday costs for Bendigo taxi patrons
A warning to Bendigo taxi patrons. From 7:00pm on Tuesday 30th October 2018 until Thursday 1st November at 6.00am every taxi ride that you take will be charged at the following rates: flag fall $11.00 plus $1.838 per kilometre plus .643 per minute because it is Bendigo Cup Day Holiday on Wednesday 31st October.
Then from 7:00pm on Monday 5th November until Wednesday 7th November at 6:00am you will again be charged these fees even thought it is not a public holiday in Bendigo but it is Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 6th November.
When I contacted Bendigo taxis last year I was told to write a letter of complaint to their head office in Mebourne who set the fare prices throughout the year. This I did. I am still waiting for my refund almost 12 months later.
