Project Underpass has seen artists Chantal Lyons, Pat Thompson, Nathan Sims and Reece Hendy painted their work on the underpasses of the bridges that go over the Back Creek Walk that stretches from Spring Gully, through Bendigo to Lake Weeroona.
The launch will begin at the Mundy Street bridge at 10am with an artists walk taking people along the creek track and under the Williamson and Miller street bridges.
Project manager Reece Hendy said the completion of the works had been a long time coming.
“Project Underpass started the process of getting a Regional Centre for Culture grant last year. We’re finally at the point of launching,” he said.
“The bridges have been really active for local street artists over the years. So this made it more official.
“There are still some blank and empty spaces we'd like to see other street artists contribute to. We’d love them to help us finish it.”
After the launch Hendy and his fellow artists will team with Bike Bendigo to paint the road on Havelin Street East at the intersection of Havelin Street East and Rodney Street.
Bike Bendigo project manager Janine Coffey said the community art project is aimed at slowing down traffic in the are.
Part of Havelin Street East (near Rodney Street) will be closed to most traffic from 8am to 5pm on Saturday.
“The Safe Speeds Challenge is part of a grant Bike Bendigo received and is inspired but the City Repair Project that was successful in Portland, Oregan,” she said.
“While Reece hosts the painting, Bike Bendigo will host bike lessons and the mountain bike group will ride to the Spring Gully track.”
Ms Coffey said the Project Underpass artworks had made the area more vibrant and attractive.
“The opening of McIvor Road underpass helped increase the use of the trail but we have seen some constant growth (of bike users in the area) and the painting has helped that,” she said.
