This weekend the city will host the RACV’s Tiny Home, which will pause on its travels at the Queen’s Gardens in Rosalind Park.
Peter Maddison, the host of Grand Designs Australia, was approached to be an ambassador for the home.
He liked the idea so much, however, that he offered to design it himself.
It had to be an exemplar for smart living and sustainability, and include all the smarts that a high end home would have. And, it had to be on wheels.
Mr Maddison began to think about the joy his generation had experienced in their parents' caravans, with fold out tables and split level living.
“The whole little package opens up like a cardboard box,” he said.
“We started off with the idea of really designing a house that was...an engaging little building that looks fantastic and has a lot of joy in it.”

It’s not just fun, the house is practical as well. It’s a complete home, with everything you need: kitchen, bedroom, sitting and a, and fully operating bathroom.
Mr Maddison hopes that by visiting the house, people will begin to think about the way they live.
“It makes us re-imagine the way we’re operating and the way we could conduct ourselves in a home,” Mr Maddison said.
“[It] would be a great outcome if people walked away thinking maybe I could change something in the way I live.”
As a super small house, the tiny home is extremely sustainable. Its size means production costs on the environment are low, while the space has been designed to be sustainable.
And for the generations struggling to edge their way into the housing market, Mr Maddison believes tiny houses could offer a dignified way to live.
Visit the Tiny Home at the Queen’s Gardens in Rosalind Park, October 27 and 28, from 10am-4pm.
