Bendigo Theatre Company will present Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap on Thursday with Allan taking on the key role of Detective Sergeant Trotter.
It is the 17-year-old’s first turn as a lead in a drama after performing in musicals Fiddler on the Roof, Grease and Barnum.
“It's not often a young performer gets to play a large, in-depth role like this. There is a lot of characterisation in it, which is a lot of fun,” he said.
“When I auditioned I was just happy to be involved. This role wasn’t on my radar, so when it was offered I was more than happy to take opportunity.
“I had not heard The Mousetrap but knew of Agatha that she was renowned for her murder mysteries.”
Of the eight Mousetrap cast members, six (including Allan) are under the age of 25. Allan said they were eager to show what they have created.
“I think a younger cast taking on such a beloved classic allows us to revitalise some of the roles that have been around for the last 50 years,” he said.
“Being able to mix with such experienced performers as well has been really beneficial for the development of all of the younger performers as well because they are able to teach us and help mentor us in our performing.”
The Mousetrap is one of the most famous murder mystery plays in the world.
Written by Christie in 1947 to celebrate Queen Mary’s 80th birthday, it premiered on London’s West End and has been playing ever since – more than 65 years and 25,000 performances.
When a blizzard traps eight guests in Monkswell Manor, a murder sees the detective called to unravel the mystery and find the killer.
Since its first performance audience members have helped keep the secret of whodunit and are traditionally left with the final words final words: “Now you have seen The Mousetrap you are our partners in crime, and we ask you to preserve the tradition by keeping the secret of whodunit locked in your hearts.”
Allan said hopes the traditional will continue with BTC’s production.
“We have known since our first read through and it’s been hard to keep my mouth shut,” he said.
“Agatha Christie is known for her twist endings and we’re encouraging audiences to keep it hush hush.
“Each character has their own hidden secrets and talents that they bring to table. Even up to some of last lines there’s still some question around whodunit. It’s really engaging.”
The Mousetrap is on at Bendigo Theatre Company’s Arts Shed in Allingham Street, Golden Square from October 25 to November 4. For tickets visit www.gotix.com.au or phone 5434 6100.
