He said the tree was about 50 – 60 feet tall and fell across not only the home, but the carport, adding to the complexity of the task ahead of SES.
“It was still attached at the bottom,” Mr Fitzpatrick said.
He believed it might have been a saving grace that the tree was still tethered, preventing it from rolling and causing further damage to the property and the occupants inside at the time.
Nine Castlemaine SES volunteers responded to the call for help, which came about 5.30am.
Mr Fitzpatrick said they were at the address for about three hours.
Despite the size of the tree, the commander said the house was strong enough to withstand the incident.
The collapsed tree put a dent in a side wall, which had to be screwed into place to make the building watertight.
It was raining as the SES responded.
Mr Fitzpatrick said recent windy and wet weather could have contributed to the tree falling.
He urged people to call the SES on 132 500 for help with a storm or flood event.
For life-threatening emergencies, call triple zero (000).
EARLIER: SES members have responded after a tree fell on the roof of a building near Castlemaine.
Castlemaine unit members were called to an address near the intersection of Lighthorse and School roads in Barkers Creek about 5.30am following reports a single-story house had been damaged.
MAP: Pinpoint highlights the intersection of the roads, not the affected property.
An SES spokesperson said the tree fell onto the lounge room area of the home, causing the roof to cave in.
They said no-one had been trapped or injured.
