Having opened their season with a resounding victory over Kangaroo Flat the Jets are in a strong position to add a second win with 279 on the board against Huntly-North Epsom.
While 279 wins more games than it loses, Jets’ captain Ben Devanny only needs to think back to the corresponding round two 12 months ago to know the job is far from done for his side.
A year ago the Jets had looked to be in prime position to start the season 2-0 when they defeated Bendigo United first-up and then – like they did last week – posted 279 against White Hills on day one of round two.
But the Jets bowlers’ were unable to back up the strong performance with the bat as the Demons – largely thanks to an unbeaten 165 from Gavin Bowles – cracked 3-300 in reply.

“I certainly remember what happened last year and similar to that day, Huntly has got a couple of really good batsmen in their line-up in Adam Ward and Josh Collinson and if they bat well and we don’t bowl well they are probably going to have no problems chasing the runs down,” Devanny said on Friday.
“We’ll be working on trying to have a good first hour, get some early wickets and give ourselves a chance of getting into their middle-order.”
The Jets had been well-positioned to push for a score of 300-plus when they had been 2-202 last week, but they lost 8-77 to be all out in the 85th over against a Power line-up that resorted to wicket-keeper Danushka Wijemanna, who took three wickets, being thrown the ball.
“From where we were going into the last drinks break we really should have got ourselves up around 320,” said Devanny, who top-scored with 64 off 103.
“We didn’t kick on as we would have liked, but full credit to Huntly, they bowled really well in the last hour.
“It’s one of those things where we would have taken 280 at the start of the day, but from where we were we would have liked another 30 or 40.”
The Jets’ team this season includes two Sri Lankan recruits who will both have key roles to play with the ball on Saturday in Chathura Damith, who will take the new ball, and left-arm off-spinner Savith Priyan.
“We’re rapt to have both of them at the club. They have fitted in really well and add a lot more bowling depth to us,” Devanny said.
“We also have Luke Jones back with us and he will bowl as well… we’ll have six or seven bowling options that we’ll be able to use on Saturday, which is something we didn’t have last season.”
Saturday’s play gets under way at 1pm.
