Students have had their perceptions of what a “typical” police officer, AFL player and hairdresser look like challenged in an exercise aimed at breaking down gender stereotypes.

The exercise was held as part of St Therese’s Primary School’s Community Day on Friday, an event focused on the Respectful Relationships program.
Students were asked draw a variety of occupations, then, at a school assembly, were introduced to people working in these roles.
The day also featured a family violence and gender stereotyping forum for members of the school community.
The Respectful Relationships program aims to support schools in promoting respect, healthy behaviours and positive attitudes.
The program became a core component of the curriculum following the Royal Commission into Family Violence.
“Respectful relationships education programs offer enormous promise for transforming the attitudes and behaviours of future generations,” the Royal Commission reported.
