Australia’s ambassador for Women, Sharman Stone, officially launched the book after a welcome from Loddon Shire Mayor Cheryl McKinnon. The Boort Babblers then lead a group sing-a-long of war songs, which ended with Auld Lang Syne.
The Pyramid Hill & District Historical Society book is on happenings in the area during the war and secretary Helen Stevens said it was a period when people scraped together what they could for the war effort even as they battled a cruel climate.
The book, which has been years in the collation, reflects on the letters home from the Second World War and the farewells, welcome homes and fund raising activities for the war effort in the district.
Much of the historical society’s new book was informed by the Pyramid Hill Advertiser, which was published up until 1971 and still is of benefit to local historians.
“It has been a wonderful source of information for the Pyramid Hill & District Historical Society. It has been our main source of income,” Mrs Stevens said.
A video from Second World War returned servicemen from the Pyramid Hill area, Lloyd Mills and Harvey Bawden, was shown on the day. The footage told their story of the the war, with the footage interspersed with details of what was happening on the front lines at the times they were recalling.
