Mr Merlino confirmed that applications had closed for the position with the recruitment process to begin immediately.
“The message to the school community is that applications have closed and there have a been a number of applications for the role of principal. It is a really strong field,” he said.
“The department will now go through the recruitment phase with interviews and have a new principal up and running in the school for the start of the new school year. It’s important that we have stability at the school and confidence going forward.”
Bendigo South East College was left without a principal after Ernie Fleming resigned in May this year.
Prior to his resignation, Mr Fleming had been temporarily stood down by the Department of Education and Training from January, 2017 – a period of almost 18 months.
An investigation by the Victorian Ombudsman found Mr Fleming used his position to employ and promote family members and used “public funds as he saw fit”.
Mr Fleming said he will not give up fighting for the “respect, support and protection of principals needed to carry out the transformation required to make education more relevant to the current and future needs of young people”.
