It’s about timing, strategy and executing split-second decisions.
Bendigo and District Cycling Club president Syd Anstee said watching track cycling was “exhilarating”.
“It’s all about the tactics, it’s not just pure speed,” Anstee said.
“You need to sit in the right spot, know when to go all out, and know who you should follow on the track.”
The club is ready to launch its summer season of weekly track cycling at the Tom Flood Sports Centre, with the first meet to be held on Thursday October 25 starting at 6pm.
“Track cycling is great to watch, even if you don’t really know too much about the sport. At the end of the day it’s the same principles as car racing, first one over the line wins,” Anstee said.
The club has produced world-class cyclists with names like Zak Dempster, Jack Haig and Chris Hamilton now competing on an international level.
There are also several junior members who are making a name for themselves on a state and national level, such as 2018 Junior National Track Championship gold medalists Alessia McCaig, Patrick Eddy and Blake Agnoletto.
The club will be holding an eight-week J Cycle program, which provides an opportunity for children 7 years and above to try track cycling, commencing on Sunday October 28.
