“Moderate storms” have been forecast for central, north central and north country districts, including Bendigo.
VicRoads issued advice for drivers to take caution in storm conditions.
“Conditions can change quickly. Be vigilant always and ensure there are no distractions that will take your focus off the road,” the statement reads.
“Make sure loads are secure, particularly on elevated roadways. Pay attention to message boards and overhead signage as speeds can be reduced if winds increase.
“Drivers are reminded to ensure they leave extra space between themselves and the vehicle in front, as braking distances increase in wet conditions.
“Be sure to turn headlights on, and keep an eye out for cyclists and motorbikes, which are harder to see.
“If the rain becomes too heavy for wipers to cope, pull over safely and wait for the rain to pass.
“Should you encounter fallen power lines, stay well clear and immediately call Triple Zero."
The heaviest storms are forecast for western Victoria, including Portland, Horsham, Hamilton, Nhill, Ouyen and Mildura.
Brace for heavy storms on Tuesday
Central Victoria is in line to experience severe thunderstorms on Tuesday, the Bureau of Meteorology says.
Severe thunderstorms are likely across almost all the region, a forecast issued on Monday afternoon says, with heavy rain and damaging winds of most concern.
Large hail is also a possibility.
Severe storms are possible in the west earlier in the day, before the tempestuous conditions move across to the centre of the state in the afternoon.
There is a high to very high chance of showers across central Victoria on Tuesday.
Maximum temperatures will range from 19 degrees in Kyneton to 24 in Echuca, with Bendigo set to reach a top of 22 degrees.
