A game sense approach to teaching physical education involves engaging children in modified strategies and concepts, which assist in the development of both the skills and tactics to understand specific sports.

The Regional Multi Sport Teacher Professional Development Program, now in its third year, highlights the similarities between netball, football and cricket when approached from a game sense prospective.

Cricket Victoria school participation officer Sophie Crockett said it was an opportunity for physical education teachers to learn new skills which could be implemented into PE programs.

"We always try to upskill teachers in the best ways to deliver education to children within sports," Crockett said.

Outcomes of physical education through a game sense approach help create “thinking players” by teaching students game rules which can help them gain a greater analytical understanding of sport strategies.

A game sense approach also encourages simple modifications to sports which can allow participants of varying ability levels to play, maximising inclusion and challenge.

Attendees will be addressed on the key stages of development of primary school-aged children and their implications for teachers, development of sport specific skills, effective communication strategies in the sporting environment, and facilitating games and activities which engage students of different ages and abilities.

The program is designed in accordance with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

The free program will be held at the Bendigo Major League Indoor Sports Centre on Friday 19 October between 9:30 am- 3pm.
