In both a literal and figurative sense we will be able to see artists at work as we travel through central Victoria from events in Bendigo, to studios in Mandurang Valley and stagings in Castlemaine.
At the hub of this activity is Artlands - a biennial conferenceon Australia's regional arts that has brought people from around Australia for five days of workshops, works in progress, conversations and presenting more than 20 cultural and local visual arts projects.
This weekend, there will be a chance for the public to immerse themselves in some of these.
Head to Castlemaine and you’ll catch a glimpse of works in progress for the next Castlemaine State Festival - with some of the artists having worked for more than a year already on their pieces.
People’s relationships with food - and the tensions it brings into daily life - will be looked at in Food Concert. As Castlemaine festival chief Glynn Roberts put it: “We wanted to look at people’s relationship to food, right down to context of their relationship with fridges.”
There will be a taste of poet Adam Ford’s work in an open-air spoken word performance titled Dance to the Anticlinal Fold - a literal journey on foot, while Muckleford artist Fayen d’Evie will present Dustcloud - a sound and performance artist piece.
Drive back through the Mandurang Valley for a taste of more local talent at the studios of metal sculptor Andrew Sardone, furniture maker and timber sculptor Linton Torr, artists Mick Truscott and Sally Poltrock and wildflower grower Marilyn Sprague.
In Bendigo, Cultural Pharmacy has taken over the conservatory. The interactive piece sees visitors creating cardboard flowers to be “distilled” into prescriptions that point people to other points of artistic interest in the city.
It points to the vibrant artistic life that central Victoria has - one that is again on the national state.
Bravo.
