Shari Oliver and her co-accused, Ammar Najjar, were listed to appear at the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday on charges relating to an incident at Kangaroo Flat on the evening of July 6.
Mr Najjar was in custody and appeared in Bendigo Magistrates’ Court by video link, but Ms Oliver – who was on bail – did not attend on the morning, as required.
Her defence lawyer Kieran Reynolds told magistrate Sarah Leighfield he had been informed his client was not able to make it due to car troubles.
Ms Leighfield said that was not a good excuse for missing a court date.
She told Mr Reynolds she would adjourn Ms Oliver’s matter if she attended court by mid-afternoon that same day.
But if Ms Oliver failed to comply, Ms Leighfield said she would issue a warrant for her arrest.
Ms Leighfield granted Mr Reynolds’ request that his client be allowed to attend Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court instead, as it was closer to her home.
But Ms Oliver did not attend the court as ordered, and on Wednesday afternoon, Ms Leighfield issued a warrant for her arrest for failure to appear on bail.
Ms Oliver and Mr Najjar are each charged with multiple offences in relation to the incident on the Calder Highway.
A male police officer sustained lacerations, bruising and swelling after he became trapped in a moving car, while a female police officer suffered a broken wrist and facial lacerations. The officers were allegedly attempting an arrest at the time.
Mr Najjar’s matter was adjourned to November 14, to allow for further discussions between his defence counsel Luke Docherty and the prosecutor.
