Each autumn, City of Greater Bendigo gardeners plant more than 30,000 bulbs in Rosalind Park and the Conservatory Gardens, which burst into a colourful display when September rolls around.
Izabelle So, Bendigo Tourism’s digital marketing officer, said social media promotion of the tulip display indicated there was a lot of interest from outside Bendigo, although noted promotional activities did target potential visitors to the city.
Of the people who had responded as ‘interested’ in tulip display on Facebook, Ms So said, more than 50 per cent were from Melbourne alone, while Bendigonians made up almost 19 per cent.
Staff at the Bendigo Visitor Centre report receiving about 10 to 15 enquiries on the tulips each day, from either walk-ins or phone calls.
Ms So said Bendigo’s tulips had points of difference to other displays in that they were free to view, had a backdrop of heritage buildings, visitors could get in close to them, and the weather was good.
The tulips were first planted in the dry years of the mid-2000s due to their need for less water than some other plants, but were so popular they became a recurring yearly event.
Those who want to see the tulips for themselves should move quickly: the beautiful blooms usually last only a month, depending on the weather.
The flowers began blooming last month.
Bendigo Tourism invites people to share their tulip experience by using the tags #BendigoTulips and #ExploreBendigo on Instagram, or posting on the Facebook page.
Those who do will go into the running to win a hamper.
