Night-time minimum temperatures this month have averaged 2.9 degrees, according to Keris Arndt, senior forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology.
Data for Bendigo goes back to 1992 and the average minimum September minimum temperatures sits at 4.5 degrees.
The coldest night this month was on September 2, with 1.8 degrees recorded.
Tonight’s minimum will be a relatively balmy seven degrees, followed by drops to four degrees Friday and then a chilly weekend to round out the month.
“I would not be surprised if we see some frost on Saturday morning and maybe Sunday morning, as well,” Mr Arndt said.
Meanwhile, average daytime temperatures have sat at 17.4 degrees, 0.4 above long-term September statistics.
Both warmer days and colder nights were being driven by dryer conditions.
“It’s been so dry and very clear overnight for much of the month. Clear nights lead to colder temperatures because more heat leaks out,” Mr Arndt said.
“The flip-side of that is that you have warmer days because there is more sunshine.”
Farmers and agronomists in the region have reported less rain over early spring. Many are preparing for those conditions to continue.
