Tom Metcalf, 22, appeared in court on Tuesday, where his defence counsel Luke Docherty successfully applied to have him released on bail while matters were pending.
Mr Metcalf has been in custody since September 6 and is charged with numerous offences, including several charges of trafficking, cultivating cannabis, weapons offences, and handling stolen goods.
In a summary read to the court, the police prosecutor said police executed a search warrant at Mr Metcalf’s Kangaroo Flat home on the morning of September 6 this year.
There it is alleged they found seven cannabis plants, 40 ecstasy pills, two grams of methamphetamine, 11.4 grams of cocaine, 0.38 grams of a brown powder said to be heroin, 23.2 grams of amphetamine and prescription medication for which Mr Metcalf did not have a prescription.
The court heard police also discovered scales, snaplock bags and tick sheets, which are alleged to have been used for the trafficking of drugs, and two booklets on growing cannabis and making methamphetamine.
The prosecutor said police also found a total of $325 in cash, said to have been the proceeds of crime, two motorised scooters believed stolen, stolen registration plates and a large number of power tools, some stolen from a vehicle in August and others bearing the markings of businesses and Powercor, also believed stolen.
Commercial-grade fireworks, a taser disguised as a torch, three double-edged swords, a double-edged machete, a switchblade and an ornamental sword were also found in the house, the court heard, as were 73 shotgun cartridges stored improperly, despite Mr Metcalf having a firearms licence and knowing the obligations surrounding storage of ammunition.
It is also alleged that about 7am on September 4, Mr Metcalf – in his distinctive vehicle – pulled up alongside another vehicle in Ironbark and stole its spare tyre.
The prosecutor told the court text messages also indicated Mr Metcalf continued to drive while disqualified.
She said Mr Metcalf’s alleged offending appeared to be a means of fuelling his drug addiction.
Defence lawyer Mr Docherty told the court Mr Metcalf would have strong support from his parents were he released on bail, noting it was his first time in custody.
Mr Metcalf’s mother Rosemary Metcalf addressed the court and said since her son’s arrest, she had looked into various options for treatment.
Since his arrest, she said, the family had been overwhelmed with support and she had no doubt that once the matter was sorted, her son would find work.
“People who know Tom, know us, know this is out of character,” she said.
The matter will return to Bendigo Magistrates’ Court next month.
