For the second consecutive start, Sell had to be content with a minor placing with the gelding at Morphettville in the $100,000 W.H. Wylie Handicap (1100m) on Saturday.
It was the first of two placegetters for the former Kyneton trainer in Adelaide.
He scored a second with the promising mare River Lee, who finished second over 1200m in a benchmark 75 handicap.
The four-year-old has won twice in five starts this preparation on the Geelong synthetic and at Bendigo and been placed in two others.
While River Lee was supported in the betting at $11, Carlingford started an $81 chance.
Sell said he aimed to return to Adelaide with the pair early next month.
“They’ve come back (to Bendigo) and will probably have a week off in the paddock and there’s a couple more races over there for them in about two weeks’ time,” he said.
“Carlingford’s race was worth $60,000 to the winner; he ended up with $8000 for running third.
“River Lee was a bit unlucky, she missed the kick – she doesn’t do that and she nearly wins.
“It was no fault to the jockey, but she did make up a lot of ground, so her run was enormous.”
Sell will have one runner at this Thursday’s Bendigo Jockey Club meeting with Alejandra.
“She’s been off and on, so hopefully she shows something,” he said.
“The other day (at Geelong) I thought she was right, but she didn’t fire – hopefully she’s fired up this week.”
The five-year-old mare has won two of her 17 starts, with her most recent win at Kyneton last December.
It has been a good couple of months for the Sell stable since the move to Bendigo in mid-July, with five winners and seven placegetters from just over 30 starters.
Meanwhile, Sutton Grange trainer Brent Stanley has continued his winning run with three-year-old filly Disenchanted breaking through for a win in her fourth start at Tatura on Saturday.
It followed Violate’s Listed race win at Flemington the previous weekend, giving his trainer 11 winners this season.
