Bendigo Crime Investigation Unit Detective Acting Sergeant Jason Smith said the man underwent surgery in relation to his injuries yesterday at The Alfred hospital.
Police believe the man to be in a stable condition.
The party responsible for the assault remains unknown to investigators, who have appealed for information from anyone in the vicinity of Guys Hill Road and Ryalls Lane from 3am – 4am on Sunday.
“Our information at the moment is limited because we haven’t had a chance to speak with the victim,” Detective Acting Sergeant Smith said.
Police believe at least two cars were heard driving in the area about the time of the assault.
Investigators have appealed for anyone with dash-cam footage or residents with CCTV footage to come forward.

UPDATE Sunday 6.45pm: Police are calling for witnesses to the assault.
It is believed the man was seriously assaulted by an unknown male at the intersection of Guys Hill Road and Ryalls Lane shortly before 3.40am.
The 36-year-old man received significant injuries to his hand and leg, believed to be sustained from an edged weapon.
Police are hoping to speak to a number of people in the area at the time, who may have witnessed the incident.
It’s understood a ride-share driver may have been in the area at the time, along with two vehicles which were seen travelling up Guys Hill Road, from Tannery lane.
Police also urge anyone else who witnessed the event or who has information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
Update, 9.42am:
A man assaulted in Strathfieldsaye received injuries to his legs and arms, Ambulance Victoria says.
The man in his 30s was flown from the scene to the Alfred Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Ambulance received the call at 3.34am on Sunday morning.

A man has been flown to Melbourne with serious injuries after an assault in Strathfieldsaye in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Police have been told a 36-year-old man was assaulted at the intersection of Guys Hill Road and Ryalls lane shortly before 3.40am.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or has information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Police have asked any residents of the area who have CCTV to check their cameras and contact police or Crime Stoppers.
