IT is bound to go down as one of the moments synonymous with the 2018 BFNL grand final.
But for Eaglehawk’s Riley Saunders he concedes his mercurial goal at the 15-minute mark of the final quarter at the Barnard Street end was a fluke.
Saunders had flown for a contested mark in a pack, but was unable to hold onto the ball and fell to the ground.
However, while on his back he gathered the ball, got boot to ball and kicked the goal-of-the-day that put the Hawks 31 points up against Strathfieldsaye.
“I saw the ball come in and tried to jump up and take the mark. It landed in my lap when I came down and I guess it was a bit of instinct,” Saunders said.
“It was well and truly a fluke, but no better time to do it I guess.”
Saunders’ ripper of a goal was one of two he kicked in the final quarter of the Hawks’ 49-point win over Strathfieldsaye.
Saturday’s win came on the back of Saunders having lost a hat-trick of grand finals the previous three years, firstly with his former club Golden Square’s under-18s in 2015, Square’s seniors in 2016 and then new club Eaglehawk last season.
