This spring-flowering, perennial plant grows from a rhizome and is one of the nicest plants for woodland gardens.
If you have a garden that receives a large amount of shade throughout the day then keep this plant in mind.
Other plants that would do well in a shady garden include Dicentra spectabilis (bleeding heart), Trilliums, Pulmonaria (lungwort), Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’ (golden Japanese forest grass) and Uvularia (bellwort).
All of these plants like a moist, well-drained soil that is humus rich.
Solomon’s seal is a fragrant plant that grows and re-establishes itself each year, the plant fades a bit during the heat of summer and then completely dies down during the autumn.
When this plant is actively growing, the stems, which are thin and weak arch over creating an elegant shape.
It was once believed that the rhizome had many medicinal purposes but now we grow it just for its ornamental value.
This is an easy plant to propagate, just divide the rhizomes or collect some of the seed that the plant produces.
This plant is a magical filler for large gardens, anywhere there is space in a shady spot.
Plant it near or amongst Helleborus, (winter or lenten rose).
The Helleborus flowers abundantly during the winter, and as the flowers are nearly finished in the spring the Solomon’s seal bursts into flower.
To care for your Solomon’s seal – take note of the following tips:
- Watering is imperative during the hot months. It’s essential that the rhizomes don’t dry out.
- Old stems should be removed, cut off at ground level. This will encourage more growth on your plant.
- Keep the soil constantly moist while the plant is becoming established.
Remember the plant is easily propagated by division, use this knowledge to increase your number of plants or give them to other keen gardeners.
- Remember the leaves and berries are poisonous.
- This is an unusual plant that is sure to be admired by many if you’re successful at growing it.
