Central Goldfields Crime Investigation Unit has been told that two males wearing gloves and hoodies forced their way into a supermarket on Barker Street in Castlemaine at about 3.20am.
The men attempted to steal cash and cigarettes but were forced to flee the store empty handed after activating security alarms.
Police believe the same men broke into a camping store on High Street at Maryborough shortly after, about 4.45am.
While inside the men stole a tin containing cash, and a generator, before fleeing again after setting off the alarm.
Police believe the men were travelling in a four-door Holden Astra Hatchback, which may have been dark blue or black.
