The Demons claimed their first Loddon Valley league 17-and-under premiership since the late-90s, with a 60-46 win against minor round premier Inglewood.

They were brilliantly led by their captain and goal attack Rylee Gallagher, who was adjudged best on court.

Coach Jackie Gallagher said the young Demons – who finished the minor season in second place - had performed well throughout the year, but really hit their straps in finals.

“In the end they played to their full potential,” she said.

“They are a great group of girls and we have some real positives coming through the junior ranks at Calivil.”

It was not the first premiership for many of the United girls, with many of them having played in the club’s 2015 and ’16 under-15 premierships under Gallagher.

Meanwhile, Maiden Gully YCW made it back-to-back 15-and-under flags with a 44-35 victory against Inglewood.

The premiership capped an amazing year for the young Eagles under coach Leisa Barry, after going through the season undefeated.

Captain and goal attack Ellie Donnellon, who finished with 21 goals, was best on court, working brilliantly in tandem with shooter Olivia Hall (23 goals).

It was a change of role for Donnellon, who played much of the season in the midcourt.

The Eagles started nervously and conceded the first six goals, but quickly found their way back into the contest to lead 10-7 at quarter time.

While she won’t be coaching the side next season, Barry indicated whoever did win the role would inherit a very handy team.

“There are still quite a few young ones in that team,” she said.

“Four of them have played in the two premierships, so there were five new this year.

“One of those, who has played in the two (Kearley Stone), is still only 13.

“We had a 12-year-old, three 13-year-olds and a couple of 14-year olds on the court, the rest were 15.”

Maiden Gully YCW scored the first of two premierships for the day with a 53-32 C-reserve win against Pyramid Hill to cap another undefeated season.

Captain Abbey Conway was best on court for the victorious Eagles.

The premiership was coached by Paige Combridge and was the Eagles’ first at C-reserve level.

In C-grade, a goal in the dying seconds from Mitiamo goal shooter Raquel Spence halted a brave Inglewood fightback as the Superoos scored a nail-biting 48-47 win.

Coach and goal attack Jenna Guy gave the Blues full credit for a tremendous final surge in a contest that had many lead changes.

“Raq was a life saver in the end, she just kept her cool and got that last goal in,” she said.

“She takes after her sister (Laura Hicks); she’s a beautiful goaler and so is Raq.

“We’d payed Inglewood three times (before Saturday) and won one and lost two, so there were big stakes going into it.

“We were pretty confident, but in the back of our mind we knew Inglewood would come out hard and strong.”

Spence was named best on court.
