After finishing in the placings three times previously, Gisborne star Maddy Stewart broke through for a well-deserved win in the Betty Thompson Medal on Sunday night.

Stewart received a rousing reception when she held off Eaglehawk midcourter Ash Ryan to win by one vote.
Stewart and Ryan were level on 20 votes with three rounds remaining.
Neither played polled in round 16 before Stewart polled three votes in Gisborne’s round 17 win over Golden Square to ensure she’d win her first Thompson Medal.
Stewart didn’t poll against South Bendigo in round 18 which opened the door for Ash Ryan to tie for the medal if she could poll three votes Maryborough.
Ashy Ryan could only manage two votes and she fell one vote short of Stewart.
Kangaroo Flat’s Danielle Markwell made a late surge to poll 17 votes and finish third ahead of Sandhurst’s Bec Smith on 16 and Gisborne’s Ella Bertachinni on 15.
