PYRAMID Hill put an end to Bridgewater’s run of flag success in the Loddon Valley league reserves competition on Saturday.
Having last year become the first club to win three reserves premierships in a row, the Mean Machine were gunning for four on the trot on their home ground.
However, they were thwarted by the Bulldogs, who turned a 10-point half-time deficit into a nine-point victory, 9.4 (58) to 7.7 (49).
The Bulldogs used a strong breeze blowing to the silo end in the third quarter to seize the ascendancy when they kicked 4.3 to 0.0 and by the final change were 17 points up.
There was less than a kick in the contest late in the game when a goal to Tom Kuhne brought Bridgewater back within three points.
However, with what was the final kick of the game, Pyramid Hill’s Chris Milroy slotted his third goal to give the Bulldogs a nine-point victory and their first flag since 2009 when they had also beaten the Mean Machine at Bridgewater.
“Bridgewater is a fantastic team and much respect to them. But credit to our boys, they pushed hard and got the job done, so I’m rapt for them,” Pyramid Hill coach Alex Harper said.
The AFL Victoria Medal for best on ground went to Pyramid Hill’s Gervase Birt.
“He was awesome today… he was in-and-under, won a lot of ball and put his body on the line for the team,” Harper said.
The polished Jake Higgins was the best player for Bridgewater.
