Peter Newham, a senior meteorologist with the Bureau of Meteorology, said a mild night would be followed by the arrival of the front on Saturday morning, which would see the temperature drop a few degrees and the development of showers.
“All of Victoria will experience a pretty cold day with that front moving through, and cold and squally westerly winds,” Mr Newham said.
Snow is forecast, falling at lower altitudes as the day wears on.
Mr Newham said it could fall as low as 500 metres elevation, with the Macedon Ranges and the Dandenongs among the areas that could experience snow in the afternoon or evening.
Bendigo is forecast to reach a top of 15 degrees on Saturday.
Elsewhere, Echuca has a forecast high of 17 degrees, Maryborough, Redesdale and Castlemaine 14 degrees, and Kyneton 12 degrees.
The cooler weather will continue into Sunday, with light morning frosts possible in parts.
