A Bendigo-born composer’s piece of music will be among the highlights of an upcoming event that will see brass and pipe bands from across the region perform together in concert.

TrumpItUp and DroneOn is a major event of the Regional Centre for Culture, a year-long arts and culture program held across central Victoria.
The Friday, September 28 event will see several bands from central and western Victoria perform in Daylesford, with the concert to culminate in a piece written by Bendigo-born and Melbourne-based composer, conductor and musician Louisa Trewartha.
Ms Trewartha said the piece, called The Nature of Sound, was written for brass bands, bag pipes, and percussion.
It was also written especially to be performed outdoors, she said, in a space large enough to accommodate many musicians.
Ms Trewartha said the eight-minute piece began with a single bagpipe, with the music developing as more pipes and drums join in, before it blends into the brass instruments.
She described it as “moving and melodic”.
There were some challenges in writing the piece: Ms Trewartha said writing for a large group of musicians of different abilities was one.
Another was finding a way to accommodate both brass and pipe bands, with the bagpipes playing in a different pitch set.
But Ms Trewartha said the piece was, deceptively, not as difficult to play as it might appear to an audience.
“I trust the groups will be able to pull off the piece, and I’m super excited about it,” she said.
Ms Trewartha is also excited for what she has described as a unique event, with having such a group of individual bands come together and collaborate.
“It’s a really special thing to happen,” she said.
Participating bands include the City of Greater Bendigo Brass Band, Eaglehawk Citizens’ Brass Band, Maryborough and District Pipe Band, Daylesford Community Brass Band, Daylesford and District Pipes and Drums, and Creswick Brass Band.
The event is open to the public and will be held at Jubilee Lake Holiday park from 2pm on September 28.
Food trucks will be on site and refreshments will also be available from the kiosk.
