Bendigo’s first Rainbow Ball will take off with a whirl at Ulumbarra Theatre later this month.
The event aims to celebrate diversity in a safe and welcoming environment.
Headspace volunteer Amber Wallace said the ball was a chance for your people who had been excluded in school life to feel like part of the Bendigo community.
“It’s for LGBTIQ people that did not get the chance to have a school dance or a ball or some kind of party to celebrate themselves,” she said.
On the night they will be welcomed by elders of the LGBTIQ+ community and support workers.
Beyond that, it’ll be a ball. Photos, dancing, speeches and finer food will be the order of the evening.
Bendigo Police gay and lesbian liaison officer Sergeant Michael Thompson is one of the ball’s organisers.
Sergeant Thompson said that the ball was a chance to celebrate diversity and let young LGBTIQ+ people know they are part of the Bendigo community.
“This ball is for me a celebration of the youth knowing that they are part of the greater community,” Sergeant Thompson said.
The event is open to young people aged 16-25 who identify as LGBTIQ+ and their friends, families and allies.
The Rainbow Ball will take place at Ulumbarra Theatre on September 28 from 6.30pm-11pm.
