The Christmas period is almost upon Australia Post and it is asking the public’s help keeping its staff safe, including in the greater Bendigo area where last financial year posties were involved in two road accidents and one canine-related incident.
Staying safe on the road was a postie’s biggest safety challenge, according to Australia Post’s Peter Bass.
"On average, every workday three posties are injured in motor vehicle accidents nationally, often involving other vehicles,” he said.
More Australia Post stories:
There were 768 road-related injuries nationwide last financial year, prompting Mr Bass to ask drivers to be alert, slow down and remove distractions.
Reversing cars contributed to a further 114 injuries, while dogs helped account for 447.
Australia Post’s tips for the community:
- Put your mobile phone out of reach when driving,
- Slow down when approaching roundabouts,
- Use your mirrors and check your blind spots for motorcycles and cyclists before turning or changing lanes,
- When reversing out of your driveway, toot your horn and move slowly,
- If you have dogs, make sure to keep them securely confined to your property,
- Keep your dog leashed when off your property.
