Lambs: 21,486. Change: down 4440.
Sheep: 17,000. Change: up 3562.
There was a modest drop in lamb numbers to 20,500 head. There was some outstanding heavy young lambs penned, however plainer lambs under 21kg cwt accounted for much of the yarding.
All the usual buyers attended although one major domestic buyer was very quiet and demand from processors overall lacked the intensity of recent weeks. The market recorded price corrections of $10 to $30/head, with the heaviest lambs the most affected.
Store buyers from the local area did step into some of the bigger-framed young lambs weighing up around 18-20kg which helped support the lighter end of the market.
The heaviest young lambs estimated at around 26-27kg cwt sold to $240, although sales over $230/head were limited to about a dozen pens. The main run of good crossbred lambs in the heavy trade weight category, 22-24kg cwt, sold from $180 to $223 to average just over $200/head. On a carcase basis the best of the young lambs were averaging an estimated 830c to 850c/kg.
The plainer young lambs with less weight and finish mostly sold from $135 to $177/head, and carcase prices did vary based on quality with most sales estimated between 700c and 780c/kg.
There was increased activity for bigger framed store lambs with a number of lots going to the paddock at $135 to $145/head. Small lambs to restockers went as far south as Tasmania at $80 to $120/head for most, with some sales dearer than a week ago.
Old season lambs were cheaper, with only the best trade weights off grain selling above 800c/kg cwt.
Another big yarding of sheep ranging from some exceptional heavy weights down to lighter ewes showing the effects of the season. One northern processor dominated buying of heavy sheep. Prices were firm to dearer than a week ago, with runs of good mutton costing from 450c to 520c/kg cwt. A stand-out pen of shorn Merino wethers estimated at over 36kg cwt sold for $193/head to make over 500c/kg cwt. A pen of extra heavy crossbred ewes topped at $211, with most sales in this category from $140 to $185/head.
