Jemima’s Gift announced it would not continue last month, beginning a lengthy process to wind up the incorporated body.
It is transferring all but two of its assets to the Bendigo Animal Welfare and Community Services.
Those remaining “very precious assets” are tortoiseshell cats Whinny and Hunni.
The cats are not yet a year old and were rescued from a drain along with another litter late last year.
All the other kittens found homes quickly after being raised by a feline foster mother and their own mum, which was also saved.
Yet the rescue traumatised Whinny and Hunni, who remain suspicious and afraid.
They are doing well in their foster home but would thrive in a nice, quiet, gentle environment.
They have been desexed, vaccinated, vet checked and microchipped and their adoption fee has been reduced to $50.00 each.
They can go together or separately, as long as they go to someone who will understand their past and love them as they learn to connect with their new owner.
Just as with all other animals the group has cared for, the plan is to keep the cats in foster care until suitable forever homes are located.
Jemima’s Gift used last month’s closure announcement on Facebook to thank those who volunteered, fostered, donated or helped out in any way.
The group encouraged people to keep committing to animal rescue, saying it took many sets of hands to keep everything going.
“Burn out is high in rescue – it takes its toll financially and emotionally. The more hands on board the easier it is,” the post read.
“We built a responsible, ethical, respected group from the ground up and that is no mean feat. We have saved around 300 lives in the three years we have been operating and that is something we are proud of.
“It’s time for us to move on. It’s not been a decision we have come to lightly and it has been a sad time for us.”
