A 36-year-old woman has been arrested in Melbourne after being recognised by an off-duty police officer.
The woman was arrested without incident in Byron Street, Footscray today, according to Detective Sergeant Roland Kurzke of Maryborough’s crime investigation unit.
The woman is expected to appear in a Melbourne magistrate’s court charged with escape today.
Update, Tuesday 9.30am:
Police are investigating a possible sighting of an escaped inmate from Tarrengower Prison near Marong.
Anyone who sights the woman is asked to call Triple Zero (000) or with information on her whereabouts CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
Earlier:
POLICE are searching for a female inmate who escaped Tarrengower Prison on Monday morning wearing a high-visibility vest.
Police received reports that the inmate – in her 30s – had left the property on the outskirts of Maldon just after 11am.
She was on foot wearing a fluorescent vest over her prison greys.
A spokesperson for Victoria Police said a search was being conducted in the area.
“The woman is described as in her 30's, perceived to be Asian in appearance, with brown hair, about 150cm tall and about 50kg,” the spokesperson said.
Tarrengower Prison is a minimum-security women’s prison focused on preparing inmates for their release.
