Specsavers Kangaroo Flat and Bendigo co-owner Natalie Mitchell said the stores had collection boxes for people to donate glasses for the initiative.
““We see people come into our store every day who purchase new glasses and no longer have a use for their old ones - normally they are still in perfect condition but the prescription is outdated,” Mrs Mitchell said.
“This program allows them to donate their pre-loved specs and change someone else’s life.”
The collection drive is under the Lions Recycle for Sight campaign, where the glasses will be reconditioned before being sent overseas to help individuals who have vision impairments.
“Vision problems can be detrimental not just to the individual, but they can have knock-on effects to their families and communities,” Mrs Mitchell said.
Mrs Mitchell said across the Bendigo and Kangaroo Flat stores approximately 5000 pairs were received each year.
Lions Recycle for Sight chairman Ken Leonard OAM said the program was part of a world-wide initiative.
“Over the last 26 years we’ve delivered more than seven million pairs of refurbished quality glasses to people in need all around the world,” Mr Leonard said.
