Born in Hong Kong and raised in England, Shepparton-based animator Ms Leung has always remained close to her heritage which she expresses through her animations.
So being a part of Enlighten Festival in Bendigo seemed a perfect fit.
Check out the projection displays on town hall and around Bull Street:
She was one of a number of artists to walk the streets of Bendigo for Enlighten, projecting her unique animations onto any objects in sight – moving or still, human or animal.
“I’ve been working on my animation for quite a while,” Ms Leung said.
“My animation started by me recording myself dancing, then imagining that I was in the Easter Parade in Bendigo. My animations are inspired by the 1800s.
“Being born in Hong Kong and raised in England, I didn’t expect to find this level of interest and acknowledgement of Chinese heritage here.”
A smattering of attendees took great delight in watching Ms Leung’s dancing animations and Chinese characters on the side of an unsuspecting terrier.
Her animations play into Chinese stereotypes, reflecting the simple questions she often gets asked when travelling in Australia.
Enlighten Festival continues on Friday night with projections on a number of iconic CBD buildings like town hall and the Rosalind Park Conservatory.
Small projections are also dotted around the Bull Street precinct, such as Leonie van Eyk’s installation Under The Same Sky which features dancers and performers on the wall at AFS Associates. It faces Janet Bromley’s Under The Same Sky, a fluttering rug-type piece with images of the Australian bush on the side of Cafe Essence.
The main event – White Night – is on Saturday night.
