It may also be the first government building in the world built to Passive House standards.
When certified, it will be the first Passive-House-standard museum in the southern hemisphere.
City of Greater Bendigo ESD engineer Nycole Wood said it was great to be recognised as a finalist.
“Everyone at council's really proud to be in the final three,” she said.
“It just goes to show that it is a really special project and it will be one of the most efficient and best performing buildings in Australia.”
Ms Wood said the environmentally friendly design of the building means temperatures will be easy, and cheap, to control.
This means the museum will be able to house international collections which need to be kept at a carefully regulated temperature and humidity.
