Moira Mac’s, based in Mayfair Estate in East Bendigo, was established in Kangaroo Flat in 1983 and has since grown to have annual sales of over $40 million, supplying major retailers such as Coles, Woolworths and Aldi.
It employs about 100 people and specialises in chilled, ready-to-eat chicken products.
In a statement, Hellers parent company Rangatira Investments said the purchase was part of Hellers’ expansion into the Australian market.
“Moira Mac’s is a key part of Hellers’ Australian growth strategy providing a platform to build on, that can be scaled up to establish an expanded presence in the Australian market,” the statement reads.
“Moira Mac’s has a great culture, a highly experienced and long-serving management team, exciting growth opportunities and through investment in its manufacturing capability, additional capacity for growth.”
Hellers is New Zealand’s largest producer of bacon, ham and smallgoods, and has recently expanded its production capacity in Christchurch and Auckland.
Moira Mac’s was one of 10 small-to-medium-sized businesses across Australia to participate in ANZ’s business growth program in 2016.
At the time, managing director Dean Russell said the business was gearing its expansion towards Asian markets, and forecast its employment numbers could double.
In 2013 Moira Mac’s announced a $2.5 million expansion of its facilities.
