Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition that affects movement. Approximately 80,000 Australians (or one in every 350 people) are living with Parkinson’s.
Every day, a further 30 people are diagnosed with the condition, for which there is currently no cure.
Video – Parkinson’s Support Group Bendigo’s Glenis Gordon discusses the importance of the Walk in the Park:
Parkinson’s Victoria CEO Emma Collin said the goal statewide was to bring the total number of people joining walks since 2009 to 27,000, which would represent the number of Victorians living with the condition.
“It’s an exciting prospect and would be a fitting tribute for this special 10th anniversary year,” she said.
Every dollar raised through A Walk in the Park helps to improve the lives of people with Parkinson’s, enabling Parkinson’s Victoria to provide support services.
The Bendigo event was spearheaded by the Parkinson’s Support Group Bendigo. Its secretary Glenis Gordon said the group was invaluable to those who wanted information, saying GPs did not always have enough information and specialists could be busy.
She said about 250 people attended today’s walk and was thankful for the community’s support providing donations and prizes.
