California Gully PS principal Andrew Frawley said the event took place in the midst of the MS Readathon, a month-long reading marathon that was very important to the school community.
“We’ve had a family close to us working through multiple sclerosis and know first hand the support provided through the Readathon,” he said.
Topping the list of the MS Readathon’s favourite reads this year is Diary of a Wimpy Kid written and illustrated by Jeff Kinney, followed by Do Not Open This Book by Andy Lee and Bad Dad by David Williams.
Nearly 1200 books have been reviewed by young readers and their comments posted to the MS Readathon’s website.
Books receiving a perfect five-star rating include Pig the Star by Aaron Blabey and The 91-Storey Treehouse by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton.
Mr Frawley said the best children’s books were ones young people could relate to.
“It’s also an opportunity to disappear into the world of the text. It’s a chance for the child to engage with it, to be creative with what is happening and really enjoy the journey the book will take them on,” he said.
“Reading’s such an important part of our lives. The ability for kids to engage with books on a regular basis is so important not only for enjoyment but for learning.”
