FOUR Bendigo Junior Football League under-16 seniors teams have tuned-up for this weekend’s first round of finals with wins on Sunday.
Kyneton, which finished the season in second position behind Sandhurst, had the closest call on the weekend.
The Tigers won by 13 points, but not before a brave effort from the young Roos, who came from 26 points down at quarter time, to trail by just 12 at half time.
The Tigers again kicked clear in the third to lead by 27 at the main break, before the Roos kicked the only two goals of the final quarter to fight the game out.
Zachary Ryan was best on ground for the Tigers, who got five goals from Harry Law.
Benjamin Savy booted three goals for Kangaroo Flat, with Mitchell Trewhella again prominent.
The Tigers will play South Bendigo in this weekend’s qualifying final after the Bloods beat Eaglehawk by 72 points.
Wil McCaig booted two goals in a best afield effort for the Bloods, who also got three goals from Jackson Hufer.
Golden Square and Strathfieldsaye will meet in the elimination final after both rounded out the minor season with wins.
The Bulldogs defeated Castlemaine by 53 points, with Jack Ginnivan continuing his strong form with five goals, giving him 42 for the season.
Dakota and Declan Slingo were among the best for the Magpies.
Strathfieldsaye rounded out its minor season with a 37 point win against White Hills, led by five goals from Todd Moule and a best afield effort from Lincoln White.
In under-14 seniors, Golden Square and Strathfieldsaye will meet this weekend in a cut-throat semi-final, with both sides coming off losses.
The Bulldogs impressed in a 13 point loss to top-side Sandhurst at Wade Street.
Max Quinn was best on ground for the Dragons, who got three goals from Hugh Morris, while Macey Eaton and Hugh Freckleton fared well for Golden Square.
Kyneton warmed up for its finals campaign with a 30 point win over a determined Strathfieldsaye.
Jed Denahy and Charlie Thompson were keys to the Tigers’ win, while Riley Paetow and Harry Teasdale (two goals) led a gallant Storm.
In under-15 girls, Strathfieldsaye Thunder will meet Kyneton in this weekend’s qualifying final, while South Bendigo will clash with Eaglehawk in an elimination final.
Storm Thunder and South Bendigo played out a thriller in the final round with Thunder prevailing by just two points.
Top-side Sandhurst rounded out an undefeated minor season with a 42 point win against Golden Square.
