The two violin players took part in Orchestra Victoria’s On the mOVe education program this week, which ends with a performance at Ulumbarra Theatre on Thursday night.
Daniel was working with OV for the first time while Beatrix has been lucky to spend three years involved in the program.
“Every time I come, I learn a lot. This year I have learned it is sometimes better to not think about it and just try,” she said.
Beatrix, 14, picked up a violin for the first time in grade 3.
“There’s such a wide variety of music in the classical (genre). It’s heaps of fun,” she said.
“(I like that) you’re never really at the top. You are learning different things the whole time. There is never a moment to say 'now I've learned it all'. It doesn't stop, it just gets better.”
Sixteen-year-old Daniel has been playing violin for eight years. This is his first time working with OV.
“It's really good to play with such a high calibre of musicians,” he said.
“They are really good at what they do and it's great to learn from them.
“Normally I'm quite loud (when I play) and sort of come crashing through the door, so it's nice to learn a different way of playing.”
Daniel said his family was a musical one.
“My grandma always played music, so it was always somewhere in my life, I've just carried it on,” he said.
“You develop a bond with what you're doing and it becomes a nice break from school. It’s never a chore.”
OV artistic director Nicolette Fraillon said Bendigo had strong music programs.
“There's a really strong, really good bunch of music teachers who have been working with us for 15 years and that's paid off,” she said.
“Combining On the Move with the Bendigo Festival has the kids able to watch the people who have been mentoring them.
“It sends a strong message of this is where you can get.”
Orchestra Victoria’s Free On the Move student orchestral performance is at Ulumbarra Theatre on Thursday at 6.30pm.
