The Dragons, who will finish as minor round premiers, were able to gain an early break on the Hawks to lead by five goals at quarter time.
It was a margin the reigning premiers were able to maintain for the bulk of the contest, with both sides scoring 11 goals in the second quarter, Sandhurst having a one goal edge in the third, while Eaglehawk delivered its best in the last term with a 15 to 13 goals return.
The Dragons went into the match without their joint coach and two-time Betty Thompson medallist Heather Oliver.
On a difficult day for the goal shooters, Bec Smith converted 26 for Sandhurst, while Dayna McGough shot 32 for Eaglehawk, with the powerful goaler contributing all but one of the Hawks’ 15 goals in the final term.
It was the second thriller played between the teams this season, with the margin being three goals in Sandhurst’s earlier season win at Queen Elizabeth Oval.
The loss caused Eaglehawk to drop to third place, with a qualifying final looming against Gisborne when finals get underway later this month.
At Strathfieldsaye, the Storm, led by goal shooters Caity Hamilton and Olivia Mason, broke through for their first win of the season against Golden Square.
The Storm won 36-31.
At Dower Park, Kangaroo Flat was too strong for South Bendigo and won 48-28.
It was a missed chance for the Bloods, who could have drawn level with Golden Square on four wins.
